"Gibbon's Secrets" is a story about 'A Boy's Memories of the 40's'. In the story I am sharing some of the true incidences that happened to me and my four friends as we were growing up in the small town of Gibbon Nebraska. I have classified the story as fictional to give me the opening to expand my memories a bit and to add some fictional happenings to bring out the possibilities of growing up with World War II in the background. My father, Reg Phelps, left me several scrap books containing the headlines and pictures from local newspapers about World War II. I have developed a time line of highlights from the battles for each year in the book starting in 1940 and ending in 1945. I am Bud, the main character in the book, and you will be able to pick me out of the cover picture as the boy the 5th from the left with a jaunty straw hat. Other pictures I have included in the back of the book were actual photographs of houses and places featured in the book. As an added feature I have included, as a Postscript, shared memories from Frank Chambers about his experience during the "Battle of the Bulge". My friend from Gibbon, Duncan McGregor, gave me copies of various elementary school programs which I have used as part of the story. As an example On December 15 1941 the Gibbon Grade School presented their Christmas program that they had been working on well ahead of the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th. The crowd of people in attendance for this "Christmas Carol Program" started the evening with heavy hearts, but left the auditorium with smiles on their faces. They were all thanking the Lord for the innocence of these Gibbon Grade School students, and the joy they brought to everyone this night. Read and enjoy my enhanced remembrance of the 40's.
Gibbon Secrets A Boy Memories of the 40 Historical Life Series Book 1 eBook RG Bud Phelps
Gibbon's Secrets is a lovely memoir, a treasure of memories of life in small Midwestern towns during the 1930's and 40's, a place and an era of innocence, simple pleasures and comparatively simple lives. As one who grew up only a short time after the author, I can relate to this way of life, when children made up their own games to play, usually outdoors, and used their own creativity to amuse and enjoy themselves. There will never be another period like it, and Mr. Phelps captures the essence of it. R.G. Bud Phelps describes this way of life in vivid, colorful detail with humor and even a mystery relating to a mysterious stalker in the neighborhood who watched the author and his friends at play. I won't give away any of the secrets, of course, but there were plenty, as the author develops his story. I highly recommend this book for anyone who grew up before the sex, drugs and rock `n' roll of the late 1960's and beyond, or to anyone interested in reading about an American culture much different than the one we live in today.Product details

Gibbon Secrets A Boy Memories of the 40 Historical Life Series Book 1 eBook RG Bud Phelps Reviews
R. G. Bud Phelps has used his own life as the basis for a partially fictional account about growing up in a small Nebraska town in the 40s. For history buffs, the outline of the American involvement in WWII will be of special interest. For those who grew up in that era it will bring back memories of what it was like for young boys during a frightening time of war. Those who belong to a younger generation will find it interesting to learn what it was like growing up in wartime USA.
The Five Friends Forever used their imaginations to invent games and activities to amuse themselves without getting into serious trouble, though they did find themselves in a dangerous situation at one point. I grew up a few years after Bud, but we still used our imaginations to make our own fun. Most people didn't have TVs and computers were still a thing of the future. One story that made me smile was the account of his older sister Jean's birthday party. Everyone dressed up as some character with a movie theme and, though Jean had made it clear that she did not want Bud at her party, his mother contrived to dress him up as mammy from "Gone with the Wind" and no one guessed who he was as he never spoke a word.
As Boyd Lemon said in his review, it was an era of which we will never see the like again. If you enjoy the nostalgic, this may be a book you would enjoy.
Gibbon's Secrets is certainly an interesting and worthwhile read. Not only from the WWII history inserts but how life was before the advent of TV, Cell-Phones, Internet & Computers. As one of the Five Friends (Duncan), the stories bring back memories of the fun times that kids our age were able to have during a simpler life style.
An engaging book about small town life in the rural midwest during the 1940's. Characters and situations that will take a "seasoned reader" back to their childhood, and that will shed some light on just how different the world was back then, for those who are not so "seasoned". A bit of history, and an easy read.
Not just a memoir, this book deftly portrays a time that is slowly receding in our collective memory. The narrative with pictures and a bonus section of a soldier's diary makes this a terrific read for memoirists or history buffs. Well done!
If you want to be taken back in time to the 1940's, this is a book for you. You follow a young boy by the name of Bud, in the town of Gibbon Nebraska. It was a joy to watch Bud and his friends create their entertainment, like we used to do. They learned valuable lessons as they grew. The history spelled out in the book about WWII tells you when and where things happened, thanks to the forward thinking of Bud's father.
It is a book to enjoy from start to finish and I would recommend it for anyone wanting to learn about home life in the 40's or the war. Enjoy.
