The Eloquent Parrot Robin Knowles 9781519362261 Books Reviews
I found this book to be very entertaining. It definitely kept my attention and wanted to keep reading it to the end. I particularly liked the short chapters and that each chapter was titled. This gave you a brief look into what each chapter was about. You don't find that in many books anymore. Another thing that was nice is there weren't many characters to keep track of. This made it very easy to follow the story line.
This was the first book that I have read of Robin Knowles and I really enjoyed it. As someone that enjoys and knows quite a bit about pirates made it even more enjoyable. Using Sarasota and the surrounding area as the main setting was great, and made me want to explore the area more, and had me hoping to find a real life Eloquent Parrot bar.
I loved Death of Rapunzel and was excited to see new books by this author. I wasn't disappointed. Eloquent Parrot was another fun easy read. Exciting characters that play in the dark side of society. It's set in Florida and as a Floridian it was fun to read about areas I've been to and recognize. The writer sets the scene in such a way you feel as if you are there, but without too many overly descriptive passages. Lots of action and turns so you don't want to put it down.
After I finished this book I immediately started the next one.
An adventure, a thriller, and a sense of justice. The main character, Edward Teach, is an alpha male, drawing women to him like nectar to bees. I told my husband if I thought I had a chance of hooking up with this man, I probably would. However, he reserves his "services" for those his parrot approves of. The essence of the plot is that Teach is the man you go to when the law can't help and you're between a rock and a hard place. He doesn't abide by the law to seek justice (not revenge). He understands that sometimes evil evades the consequences of their action. But he protects the innocent and makes sure the clients are on the right side of the scales. His sidekick, Hibiscus, is another unique character. She believes she is a 300 year old Voo Doo princess and that she and Teach and the parrot have been together in many lifetimes. Teach doesn't buy in, but things happen around Hibiscus that cause him to consider the possibility. And then there is the Parrot--Blackbeard, who is quite the talker when an attractive young thing walks by. Together, the team helps serve justice to bad guys (plenty of those) and assist some good guys along the way.
A few typos, but a tight story with lots of action, unique characters, a slightly paranormal twist, and plenty of hot men and women to go around. Set in Florida, you can see the lush landscape, the flashy cities, and the rural heart of Central Florida.
I purchased this book at a signing two years ago and have since purchased the sequel "The Parrots Revenge."
A real page-turner, I read this book over a weekend. As a long time Tampa resident, I enjoyed seeing the plot play out in authentic locations on the west coast of Florida. Knowles clearly knows plenty about boats and ships.
Our main character, Edward Teach, is a classic hero figure in the mold of Doc Savage or James Bond. Wherever he goes, he is the strongest, smartest, sexiest, best prepared, and most dangerous person in the room. In addition to running a bar, he occupies himself with occasional jobs as a "fixer" who enjoys going outside the law to get clients out of jams.
His client, Roger Cooley, is the most believably rendered character, with a variety of interesting personality quirks. I would wager that Roger is based on one or more real people. Roger's estranged wife also has complexity. She makes a number of good and bad decisions that remind me of things my Facebook friends post.
Hibiscus the barmaid and Blackbeard the parrot are Edward's loyal associates. Together, they bring voodoo magic and hints of reincarnation into the mix. Hibiscus' actions are important plot drivers and her insistence that she and Blackbeard are 300 years old brings some interesting ambiguity and mystery to the story.
Great book! Thanks, Robin Knowles. Good plot, fun characters and the twists had me guessing.... (can someone REALLLLLY do that voodoo stuff??) Loved it. And now I've started "The Parrot's Revenge." Can't wait to see how IT turns out.
